Until the late 1960s cheap holidays to Spain were simply not available, up until then the only practical way to reach the Spanish Costa's was by boat and probably combined with a long overland trek by train.

But then Thomas Cook and other enterprising travel agents came up with the idea of packaging flights, ground transportation, hotel accommodation and food at incredibly reasonable rates that became affordable to huge numbers of potential tourists who for the first time could enjoy the concept of cheap holidays to Spain.

It is true that these first adventurers into uncharted Mediterranean waters were met with some pretty unpleasant horrors that they were not used to dealing with. Cheap holidays to Spain would often mean that your luxury hotel overlooked another development under construction as throughout the 60s and 70s in particular, vast areas the Spanish coast became one huge building site.

The food was strange and 'foreign' we could not drink the water and hardly anyone spoke English. But that was the bad side, and the truth was that Spain had a huge amount to offer, not least of all was the guarantee that cheap holidays to Spain would always be accompanied by hot long sunny days and balmy evenings perfect for a cold beer or dancing the night away at one of the plentiful bars and nightclubs that sprung up to meet the mushrooming demand from huge numbers of eager tourists.

Leaping forward 40 years and many things have changed, and now cheap holidays to Spain tend to be far more suitable for tourists tastes. Huge numbers of foreigners have settled along the Costa's of mainland Spain and the islands in the Mediterranean. This influx of foreigners has meant that many services such as restaurants that cater to foreign tastes are now plentiful.

The style of holidaymaking has changed considerably with many package tours now replaced with independent travel as tourists no longer rely so heavily on travel agents to hold their hands as they make their way to the now familiar Spanish destinations.

Cheap holidays to Spain came into their own during the 1990s with the arrival of no-frills airlines in particular the pioneering EasyJet. These new companies made it possible for people to make bookings online without the middleman and vastly reduced the cost of flying to Spain to sometimes only a few pounds.

Another change that made cheap holidays to Spain much more viable fact that huge numbers of foreigners purchased apartments and villas across the country which then became available to their families and friends as free or very reasonably priced accommodation, this in turn pushed down the price of all hotels and accommodations in Spain.

As such it is now possible to have truly enjoyable cheap holidays to Spain with all the comforts of home at an extremely reasonable rate but without the inconveniences that the early adventurous tourists to Spain had to tolerate.

There is no doubt that cheap holidays to Spain are here to stay and that they will certainly change and develop but will always offer visitors extremely good value for money as they plan ever more frequent visits to enjoy all that Spain has to offer.
